What is the process for checking in for an Iberia flight?

There are two ways to do the Iberia check-in process with Iberia, so you can reserve your seat and obtain your boarding pass in either of these ways:

Online/Mobile Check-in.
Self-Service Kiosk Check-in.

What is the check-in time for my Iberia flight?

In order to make the check-in process, check baggage, and access the right gates on time before the flight departs, it is recommended that passengers arrive at the airport three hours in advance.

Iberia flights have the following check-in deadlines:

Shuttle service (Madrid-Barcelona) – 15-20 minutes before departure.
45 minutes before departure for short- and medium-haul flights.
55-60 minutes before departure – long-haul flights, Africa, and Tel Aviv.
Santo Domingo, Puerto Rico, Ecuador, and Peru – 75 minutes before departure.
120 minutes before departure from Caracas.

Check-in via web/mobile

Availability

You can check in online either the moment you buy your ticket (e.g. flights to/from Germany, Italy, Morocco, etc.) or the day before your departure date (for flights to/from the US, the UK, Cuba, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and China, or in certain cases when the flight has been booked through another channel other than Iberia) until 1 hour before departure. Two exceptions to the Online Check-in deadline apply: 90 minutes before scheduled departure in Lagos and San Jose, and 180 minutes before departure in Caracas.

Passengers with Iberia tickets can use this service. In addition, if you use the booking code from the notification email that confirms your purchase on iberia.com to start Online Check-in for codeshare flights operated by American Airlines, Vueling, Finnair or British Airways, you will be taken to the operator’s website.

Restrictions

The following situations will prevent passengers from using the Online Check-in:

It is possible to connect an Iberia flight at origin with an IB5XXX flight operated by Vueling on the same itinerary.
In the case of unaccompanied minors, wheelchairs, pets, or other special needs.
Passengers who present their credit cards at the airport can only make seat reservations and cannot print boarding passes.
When booking an Air Shuttle flight for more than one person.

Options

There are only a few steps involved in online check-in:

Select one of the two options below to find your reservation:
- The reservation code and the passenger’s last name are shown in the booking.
- If you provide your Iberia Plus card number when making the reservation, you can do the search just by entering your card number and PIN.
Select your flight. You can choose which flights you wish to check in for.
If you have already reserved your seat, the check-in will take place with that seat. You can choose the seat based on the seat map availability.
Ensure all the information provided is correct before issuing boarding passes.
For each flight, you will receive one boarding pass. You can choose from the following options to receive your boarding pass:
- Check-in from a PC:
  - A PDF document can be printed as a boarding pass.By email, you will receive your boarding pass.
- From a mobile device:
  - Email the Mobile Boarding Pass to yourself.
  - You can download the Mobile Boarding Pass as an image or, if you have an iPod or iPhone with iOS6 version or higher, you can download it to your Passbook wallet very easily.
  - You will receive an SMS with a link to download your Mobile Boarding Pass.

Mobile Boarding Pass

The mobile boarding pass can be obtained by logging into the “check-in online” starting 24 hours prior to the departure of your flight and starting your individual check-in.

Mobile boarding passes can be used at check-in, security screens, and on the flight. They make identification easier and faster, reducing the use of paper. In the unfortunate case that you delete the boarding pass from your phone by mistake or it cannot be read properly, you can always get a conventional boarding pass at any check-in kiosk or Iberia check-in counter available at the airport. In the same way, if your phone battery runs out or if you simply forget to bring it home, you will be responsible.

At the airport, if you only have hand baggage to travel with, you should confirm the boarding gate on the screen that displays the flight information, pass through the security controls, where your identification documents and your boarding pass must be presented, and then you can proceed directly to your flight’s departure gate.

Alternatively, if you are traveling with luggage that needs to be checked in, you must deliver it to the check-in counter, or to the Fast Bag Drop counter at Barcelona and Madrid airports, before the deadline.

You can check in for your flight, select a seat, and print your boarding pass using the airport’s touchscreen kiosks.

Iberia Airport Counter Check-in

The airport counter will ask for your ticket and travel documents when you check in. Your bags will be labelled and tagged, and checked in, and you will receive your boarding pass and baggage receipt. You’ll also be asked to pay airport taxes and service charges before going through security checks.

Boarding

There is an important rule to follow: gates close 20 minutes before departure. It is important to consider that flights cannot depart behind schedule due to passengers’ delays; in these cases, the airline may apply cancellation or no-show rules to these passengers, resulting in additional charges.

As a result of current circumstances and health authority recommendations, boarding is by row, from rear to front. Priority boarding has been suspended for now. This is a temporary preventative measure to maintain the greatest distance between passengers and increase your safety. As an added bonus, Iberia recommends that hand luggage be checked in free of charge in order to minimize movements on board.
