There’s a good chance you’ll find yourself booked on a United Airlines flight at some point in the future, especially if you live near one of its hubs. Yet, plans can quickly change.

During the pandemic, United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby significantly changed the landscape when he announced the airline had removed many change fees. Here’s how to change or cancel United’s flight.
United Airlines Cancellation Policy
United Airlines should be informed that you have canceled United Airlines before beginning the flight alteration process. According to the ticket type, United Airlines Flights allow passengers to change or cancel their reservation.
For example,
- Tickets booked under Basic Economy are not usually refundable and can’t be changed or canceled after you buy.
- There is usually no penalty for canceling or changing Economy Plus, Business, or First-Class tickets.
- Regardless of fare class, there is a 24-hour grace period after booking for changes or cancellations. United Airlines will allow the same as long as there is no surcharge.
For changes made after this time, you will be charged a change fee based on the date and ticket type.
How do you change or cancel your United flight?
United.com accepts cancellations or changes to flights booked through it. Visit the United Airlines website and follow these steps:
Visit your United Account and log in.
Go to the homepage and click “My trips.”
You can change or cancel a trip by clicking the “Manage trip” button.
Select “Change flight” or “Cancel flight” from the top menu.
Follow the instructions on the screen.
For cancellations of paid tickets, United will send a voucher that can be used toward future purchases.
To cancel or change your reservation, you must call the OTA you booked with if you can’t access it online.
Additionally, United offers same-day changes for both paid and award tickets. For all MileagePlus Premier members, United eliminated the same-day change fees as part of the change fee elimination. Changing flights will result in fare difference fees if your original fare bucket isn’t available.
Award tickets can’t be changed to a different class. On the same day of your reservation, you can change it at check-in or by selecting your reservation.
United Airlines Flight Change Policy
As with anything in air travel, United Airlines Flight Change Policy has some nuances. Most economy and premium cabin tickets within the U.S. and certain international destinations allow you to change your flight without incurring any fees.
It was introduced during the pandemic, which allowed for travel flexibility. Remember, you’ll be responsible for the fare difference if your new flight is more expensive than your original one. You get a travel credit if your new flight is cheaper.
You can’t usually change your Basic Economy flight unless you do it within 24 hours of booking. With United Elite status or a flexible trip, extra perks are available.

United Airlines Date Change
United Airlines has abolished its flight change fee, allowing you to change your ticket dates unlimited times. According to United Airlines policy, ticket changes can be made up to 11 months before the original scheduled date.
A fare difference greater than the base fare must be paid using the same payment method. Lower fares will be reimbursed if they are available.
United Airlines Seat Change
United Airlines offers a variety of options for purchasing a different seat or upgrading your class of service if you do not own a Basic Economy ticket. Depending on United Airlines flight change policy, passengers can upgrade or change classes after purchasing premium class fares.
United Airlines Name Change
Due to the United Airlines passenger name change policy, reservations cannot be transferred to another passenger. Despite this, United Airlines allows passengers to change their names up to three characters without paying a fee.
When changing the name on a trip ticket, a passenger must call United Airlines to update the flight phone number.
United Airlines Flight Change to a New Destination
According to United Airlines policy, passengers can change their origin or destination without incurring a change fee. Passengers who choose higher fares will be charged a difference. One hour before the scheduled departure time, United Airlines allows passengers to rearrange their flights to another destination.
United Airlines Refund Policy
For travelers who wish to get a refund for unused or canceled tickets, understanding the United Airlines Refund Policy is imperative. Fare type and cancellation timing affect refund eligibility. Fully refundable tickets, such as those purchased in upgraded cabins or with flexible fares, give passengers increased flexibility when refunding their tickets.
United Airlines changed the scheduled time, resulting in non-refundable ticket cancellations but no cash refunds.
Despite some tickets not being eligible for cash refunds, passengers still get credit for future United Airlines flights. An amount equal to the original ticket price less any applicable fees is the credit value. Only future flights can be purchased with credits that are valid for a limited time.
