British Airways Flight Change Policy

Occasionally, things happen without notice, and passengers must change their flight bookings due to uncertainty. To help their passengers, British Airways provides the most comfortable flight change policy. If you wish to change your flight ticket, you must read these British Airways terms and conditions.

  • Flight tickets that have already been booked can be changed in terms of date, time, name, or schedule.
  • On short-haul flights, passengers can make changes for free online, but they must pay the difference in fares.
  • You can check your flight ticket status online in the My Booking section if you want to make changes.
  • Your flight will be rebooked within three hours of its departure if it gets delayed from its point of origin.
  • A British Airways flight change fee must be paid if you wish to change your flight ticket.
  • Additionally, the British Airways website offers an online calculator that can help passengers calculate flight change costs.

British Airways Change Fee

In most cases, British Airways does not charge a change fee when you make changes online (for most short-haul fares), but you must pay the difference between the original fare and the new fare. The cost of making changes at the airport or over the phone will apply.

  • Online flight changes: Free (most short-haul routes)
  • Change fee by phone: $25 (plus the difference in fares)
  • Change fee at the airport: $35 (plus any fare difference)

British Airways Cancellation Policy

British Airways offers passengers the option of canceling their flights at any time. It is not possible to cancel reservations for passengers who book flights on the day of departure.

You can cancel your flight according to the terms and conditions. If a passenger wishes to cancel their flight booking, they should review British Airways Cancellation Policy. To learn more, take a look at the points below:

  • During the three hours before the departure, British airlines allow all passengers to cancel their flights.
  • Refunds are not available to passengers who cancel their flights between 2–1 hour before departure.
  • Domestic, international, round-trip, one-way, and multi-city flights can all be canceled.
  • Last-minute flight bookings cannot be canceled. Due to British Airways policy of not allowing passengers to cancel flights on the same day of booking and departure.
  • For cancellations, only flights booked directly from the British Airways official website are eligible. Bookings made through third parties cannot be canceled by British Airways.
  • No penalty or cancellation fee will be charged to passengers who cancel within 24 hours of booking.
  • You will have to pay a penalty fee if you cancel a flight after 24 hours of purchase.
  • Ticket types determine what penalty charges you will pay. As a result, British Airways basic economy fares are more expensive than other classes.
  • Also, if your ticket is refundable, you will get a complete or partial refund depending on the timing of your flight cancellation request.
  • For non-refundable fares, there is no refund. Occasionally, airlines may provide a voucher for a future flight.
  • Only fully booked/purchased flight tickets can be canceled.
  • Your flight will either be refunded or rebooked on the same day as an alternative flight if British Airlines cancels it.

British Airways Cancellation Fee

British Airways offers a luxurious flying experience and is passenger-friendly. Furthermore, you can cancel your ticket 3 hours before your flight departure. As long as you cancel your flight ticket within 24 hours of booking, you are not charged a cancellation fee by British Airways.

  • There is no charge for canceling refundable or non-refundable tickets.
  • Domestic and international flights have different cancellation fees.
  • The cancellation fee is different for economy and business class tickets.
  • Furthermore, the cancellation fee varies from $10 to $450 after the 24-hour risk-free period has expired.
  • On the British Airways official website, you can find a cancellation fee calculator.

British Airways Baggage Fees

Depending on your status level and your flying class, British Airways allows you to bring in a limited number of bags without incurring a fee.

By ticket type

  • Basic economy: Checked bags are not free.
  • Standard economy: One checked bag is free.
  • Premium economy: Two checked bags are free.
  • Business class: Two checked bags weighing up to 70.5 pounds (32 kilograms).
  • First-class: Three heavy checked bags, weighing up to 70.5 pounds (32 kilograms).
Elites get more bags for free

There are four levels of status available through British Airways’ frequent flyer program, Executive Club: Blue, Bronze, Silver, and Gold.

Members of the Silver Tier can check two bags in the economy, excluding basic economy, for free for each person on their reservation.

Any class, except basic economy, where a checked bag weighs more than 70.5 pounds (32 kilograms), is free for Gold members. This applies to everyone on your booking.

Additional bags cost

Depending on the class of your cabin fare, you can pay a fee online or pay at the airport, which costs more.

You’ll pay $90 for a second checked bag and $170 for your third and fourth bags online. Your second bag will cost $100, and your third and fourth bags will cost $200 at the airport.

Consider booking the next-higher cabin of service if you need to travel with extra bags. Your bag allowance could be used for less than you would have to pay in extra baggage fees if you move up.

Strollers, medical equipment, and other items when traveling

When flying with children, you should check the following items:

  • Fully collapsible stroller.
  • Booster seat or car seat.
  • The travel cot.
  • Back carrier for babies.

There are no weight restrictions or fees for heavy medical equipment that exceeds standard allowances on British Airways. Wheelchairs and mobility equipment are included in this category. Traveling with heavy equipment, liquids, or syringes may require you to get a doctor’s note.

British Airways Seat Selection Fee

As long as you haven’t booked a basic economy ticket, you are eligible to choose your seat for free when you check-in. Seat selection fees vary depending on your ticket type and travel class if you want to choose your seats sooner.

Normally, basic economy passengers have their seats assigned by the airline, but they can select seats either at booking or at check-in, based on the itinerary.

British Airways Priority Boarding Fee

Executive Club Bronze members do not have to pay a fee for priority boarding with British Airways. No matter what cabin class you are traveling in, Executive Club Bronze membership includes priority boarding. Depending on your priority, your boarding pass will display a group number.

Among the other ways to qualify for priority boarding are:

  • Business and first-class fares are more expensive
  • Priority boarding with a co-branded credit card from the airline
  • Traveling with an airline with an eligible travel agreement

Premium economy passengers on British Airways are also offered priority check-in.

The best way to avoid British Airways fees

There are different fees for checked bags and ticket changes on each airline. It is helpful to know these fees before you book to avoid unexpected costs or figure out how much you will need to budget for.

Research the airline’s website for specific information related to your flight and situation in advance.
