Alaska Airlines Fee: Flight Change, Cancellation and More: Everything You Need To Know

Alaska Airlines Fee

There’s a common misconception that extra fees are the only thing that low-cost carriers charge customers to recover the revenue from deeply discounted tickets, but that’s just not true.

A fee or charge is also associated with additional services offered by regular airlines. Check out Alaska Airlines Fees and find out how to avoid them.

Alaska Airlines Flight Change Policy

Alaska Airlines Flight Change Policy focuses on its clients. By abolishing the change fees, the airline intends to offer travelers comfort by allowing them to change their flights at no cost.

Terms of Alaska Airlines Flight Change

Alaska Airlines Flight Change Policy is summarized below:

  • Free Flight Changes: Except for saver fares and changes on the same day, most flight changes are complimentary.
  • 24-Hour Window: Modifications can be made within 24 hours after the purchase of the reservation.
  • Same-Day Confirmed Changes: You must request amendments before the original flight departs if you need to make a same-day change. Ideally, the apt flight should depart on the same day as your primary flight. Despite the $25-$50 fee, fares are not affected.
  • Saver Fares: Saver Fares are unchangeable, but under the 24-hour cancellation policy, they can still be dropped for full reimbursement.
  • Online Changes: Alaska Airlines tickets can be modified online without passenger check-in, without saving fares, and with government fares included.

Alaska Airlines Change Fee

Regardless of ticket type, passengers traveling in First Class and Main Cabin can change their flight tickets without having to pay a change fee. Saver tickets cannot be upgraded to first-class or main cabin tickets, according to Alaska Airlines policy.

For Alaska flights traveling 500 miles or fewer, the cost of a same-day change is $25; for Alaska flights traveling 501 miles or more, the cost is $50. There is a 24-hour window in which you can change your flight on Alaska Airlines.

Saver fares are non-changeable.

For the most up-to-date information, check the Alaska Airlines website.

Alaska Airlines Cancellation Policy

Following the first of May 2021, Alaska Airlines changed its cancellation policy. As part of Alaska Airlines revised cancellation policy, there will be no cancellation fee for First and Main cabins.

While airlines allow you to cancel your savers fare within 24 hours of booking your flight, if you do not meet the refund requirements, you may be eligible for future travel and can use it for your next reservation.

For cancellations within 24 hours of purchase, this airline will give you a full refund, while for non-refundable tickets, you will receive a credit for future travel. Future travel is valid for up to 12 months from the date of issue and can be used for your next booking.

Alaska Airlines Cancellation Fee

When canceling an Alaska flight, you may need to pay a cancellation fee. You won’t be charged if you cancel your flight within 24 hours from the time of booking, according to Alaska’s 24-hour Cancellation Policy. Travelers will receive a full refund after the fee is waived.

Depending on the fare, trip, and class of the flight, Alaska Airlines has different cancellation policies. On a domestic flight, a passenger will be charged $125. Meanwhile, international flight travelers will pay $200-$500.

Alaska Airlines has a variety of products and services that you should know about if you are a frequent Alaska Airlines traveler. You are also entitled to a name change policy through Alaska Airlines if your name is spelled incorrectly. As a result, you would not be required to cancel your flight since you had the option to modify it

How do I change or cancel a flight on Alaska Airlines?

You can change or cancel your Alaska Airlines flight by calling 1 (800) 252-7522 or visiting their website and signing into your account, choosing “Manage Reservations,” selecting your booking, and choosing “Change or Cancel.” To choose a new flight, follow the prompts and pay any applicable fees or differences in fare. You should familiarize yourself with Alaska Airlines Cancellation or Change Policies. Some tickets may have restrictions or additional fees.

Alaska Airlines Name Change Fee

In recognition of the need for flexibility, Alaska Airlines charges a $125 Name Change Fee. Alaska believes in fairness. There are instances where this fee won’t apply:

  1. You can make any necessary changes or corrections during the 24-hour grace period following ticket purchase.
  2. The name will be adjusted, typically by three letters, to correct obvious errors. For example,
    • Jan is now Jane.
    • Reversing the first and last names in order.
    • Correcting a typographical error in a name.
    • Fill in the middle name field with the last name.
    • Add or correct a title, suffix, or prefix.

Alaska Airlines Name Change Policy acknowledges that life happens, and the fee structure reflects our commitment to empathy and fairness to our customers.

Alaska Airlines Baggage Fees

Make sure you understand the baggage rules and fees before buying a ticket. The purpose is not just to confirm your luggage limits, but also to determine fees.

Regardless of your ticket type, Alaska Airlines offers free baggage checking for carry-on bags.

For your first checked bag, the fee is $35, for your second, $45; and for your third, $150.

Who avoids this fee?
  • First-checked bags are free for Alaska Airlines Visa Signature® credit card holders.
  • All Elite-level Mileage Plan members get two free checked bags.
  • First-class passengers are free to check their first and second bags at check-in.
  • Active-duty military personnel and travelers on travel orders get free baggage checkups for up to five bags.

Fees for higher-weight or oversized bags

Getting a bag checked that’s 51 to 100 pounds or exceeds 63 linear inches costs $100 extra.

Who avoids this fee?

Flexibility is only available to active-duty military personnel and their dependents. Higher-weight bags under 70 pounds are exempt from the $100 fee, but anything above that is still subject to it. Exceptions are not made for oversized baggage.

Same-Day Flight Change Fee

Alaska Airlines charges $25 per same-day confirmed change for flights between Anchorage and Fairbanks, Seattle and Portland, and Seattle and Spokane, and flights within California. It costs $50 to make a change on all other flights on the same day.

Alaska Airlines Unaccompanied Minor Fee

Depending on whether your kid is flying direct/nonstop or with connections, you will be charged $50-$75 over and above your regular ticket for them to fly independently. For coast-to-coast flights or flights to Hawaii, this service covers proper identification for your child, a meal on flights over two hours, and an entertainment tablet. It’s mandatory for kids between the ages of 5 and 12, but optional for kids between 13 and 17.

Who can avoid this fee?

Minors who are MVP Gold or MVP Gold 75K members are exempt from this fee, but they must be elite members, so only mini-frequent flyers are exempt.

Alaska Airlines Seat Selection Fee

Depending on whether you have elite status with Alaska or the Oneworld Alliance, your seat selection fees vary. Keep these things in mind when you book your flight:

  • Saver class. You will be assigned a seat at check-in if you book a Saver class fare. Even as an Alaska or Oneworld elite, you must pay extra if you want a specific seat.
  • Non-elite flyers. For non-status Alaskans and Oneworld members, when you book fares other than Saver class, you’ll have the choice of free main cabin seating, or preferred or premium seating, like an exit row or Alaska Premium Seats.
  • Elite flyers. For Alaska and Oneworld elite members flying on non-Saver fares, you can book any open seat in the main cabin at no charge, including those in preferred rows that are only available to those members.

As a member with elite status, you may also be upgraded to first class or premium class for free. When you book a main class fare and want to upgrade to first class or premium class right away, you will have to pay extra.

Alaska Airlines Pet fee

Pets in the cabin fee

Small pets (dogs, cats, rabbits, and household birds) can travel in an Alaska Airlines cabin if their combined weight does not exceed 20 pounds (9 kilograms). At least eight weeks must have passed since the pet was born. If two seats are purchased, each passenger can travel with a maximum of two pets.

Two pets of the same breed may travel in one carrier. The first class can accommodate 1 pet, and the main cabin can accommodate 5. During boarding in the Alaska Lounge, and onboard an aircraft, pets must be contained in a carrier at all times. Pets are allowed in the cabin only if the passenger is 18 years old or older. It costs $100 per pet to travel in the cabin. The fee for flights departing from Canada is $105 each way.

Pets in Checked Baggage Fee

When the combined weight of the pet and carrier does not exceed 150 lbs (68 kg), Alaska Airlines will allow small domestic animals such as cats, dogs, ferrets, guinea pigs, hamsters, household birds, non-poisonous reptiles, potbellied pigs, rabbits, and tropical fish to travel as check-in baggage.

With approval, other pets may be accepted. For checked baggage, dogs and cats must be at least 8 weeks old. A maximum of one adult pet or two live puppies or kittens weighing less than 20 pounds each is allowed in a carrier. Each way, pets are charged $100 as checked baggage.

Extreme cargo temperatures may cause Alaska Airlines to decline pets.

Who can avoid this fee?

There are no waivers for pet fees for passengers who don’t fly with pets.

Alaska Airlines Partner Award Booking Fee

Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan miles will be charged a partner award booking fee of $12.50 whenever you use them on a partner airline. To save money, you can’t book four tickets at once. This applies each way, for each award ticket.

Who avoids this fee?

Nobody.

Alaska Airlines Call Center service charge

Whether booking a revenue ticket or an award ticket through Alaska or its partners, a new reservation will cost $15 per itinerary if you call Alaska on the phone. Your total cost if your itinerary is round-trip for five people is $15.

Who avoids this charge?
  • MVP Gold 75K or MVP Gold 75K Mileage Plan Elites.
  • Alaskaair.com customers who book online.
  • You can get this fee waived if you book an award on a partner who is not found on Alaskaair.com.
